Study of the activity of biodrugs, PPARs agonists and natural products with therapeutic potential in atherosclerosis

Abstract

The cardiovascular diseases, that have atherosclerosis as their major pathophysiological process, constitute one of the main mundial causes of morbidity and mortality contributing to 30% of deaths world-wide, including in Brazil, with high costs to Public Health as they affect a great part of the economically active population. Atherosclerosis is a multi-factorial chronic immune-inflammatory disease to wich the only available effective therapeutic strategy is based on the control of its risk factors in order to increase the life expectance and quality and to prevent dangerous outcomes as heart infarction, stroke and death. As the current therapeutics of atherosclerosis only allows toavoid the progression of atherosclerotic lesion, the search for new drugs for treating it is crucial. In this context, our research group has developed several strategies focusing on the discovery of drug and biodrugs candidates that can act on the atherosclerotic process. In this project we propose different approaches for the investigation of the actions of recombinant antibody fragments, peptides, and natural and synthetic compounds by using in vitro, ex vivo, in vivo systems, including several cell culture assays and experimental models of atherosclerosis. The activities of these compounds on the immune response, inflammatory process and angiogenesis, that are relevant to atherogenesis and atherosclerotic lesion progression, will be investigated with the major goal to contribute for the developing of new therapeutic strategies for atherosclerosis.
