Exposure to nonessential metals in São Paulo: blood levels in preschool children and associated risk factors

Abstract

Metals do not break down and they can stay in the body until they is excreted. During this time, the metal may be transformed into another more toxic or less toxic species. In Brazil, there are scarce data on metals contamination, especially in the more vulnerable population composed by preschool children. The aims of this study are: a) to estimate the lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd) and mercury (Hg) blood lead levels in children attending Day Care Centers (DCCs) from the city of São Paulo; b) to correlate the metals levels with the location of DCCs and c) to identify potential associations between elevated levels of those metals found in venous blood and risk factors present in the home and school settings. This study will include 26 DCCs, totalizing around 2,400 children aged 1-3 years. A questionnaire will be applied to parents/guardians to obtain socioeconomic and demographic information and to investigate potential risk factors for metals contamination in children's homes. DCCs also will be checked and potential risk factors found will be registered in a specific form. Venous blood samples will be collected from all the study children, whose parents/guardians have signed the informed consent form, to estimate the metals concentrations. Venous blood samples will be analyzed by GF AAS for determining Pb and Cd and by direct mercury analyzer for Hg analysis. The analysis will be performed by the Applied Spectrometry Laboratory (ASL) of the Chemistry Institute of the USP and by the Toxicological Analysis Sector of the CETESB Laboratory, being that 10% of the blood samples will be analyzed by both for comparison between laboratories. Descriptive statistics, correlation tests and Multiple Regression Analysis will be used. (AU)
