Design and prototype construction of the CTA telescopes

Abstract

This project aims to design and construct a sophisticated mechanichal struture for the telescopes of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA)Observatory. CTA is an international collaboration which intends to construct the new generation of ground gamma ray telescopes to study astroparticle physics among other subjects of astrophysica linterest. The plan is to build hundreds of telescopes in three different configurations in order to detect gamma rays with energies between 10 GeV and 100 TeV. Ground based gamma ray telescopes have been proved to produce very interesting results over the last two decades. The CTA experiment, which will have 10 times more sensitivity than any currently operating gamma ray telescope, is presently at thestudy phase and choice of sites. The prototype phase starts in 2013 and the Obsevatory construction should start in 2014. Recently a groupof researchers (IFSC and UFABC), developed the conceptual design of amechanical struture for the CTA telescopes. This design was presented,studied and approved by the internacional collaboration. Theconceptual design was financed by FAPESP via the process number2010/19514-6. The present project represents a continuation of theprevious one. Here we propose to design the details of the strutureand build a prototype. The participation of the braziliancollaboration in the construction of the telescopes is mandatory inorder to garantee the access to the most important dataset inastroparticle physics to be recorded by the CTA Observatory in the next two decades.
