Abstract

Perinatal depression is a highly prevalent phenomenon (between 12% and 37% in Brazil), with serious implications for maternal-infant bonding, including children's development disturbances. PROGRAVIDA is an ongoing randomized community assay aimed at evaluating the impact of a Depression Management Program (DMP) with pregnant women who show depressive symptoms and are attended at Basic Health Services employing the Family Health Program strategy. DMP aims at the prevention of these symptoms as evaluated in the 6th month after delivery, compared to women who received conventional treatment. The objective of this proposal (PROAPEGO) is to evaluate if DMP has any impact on mother-infant bonding, on maternal depressive symptoms and confidence, as well as on infant's neuropsychological development at six and twelve months of age among participants of PROGRAVIDA and their children. It is estimated that some 800 women of the approximately 1000 PROGRAVIDA participants will be included in PROAPEGO. They will be evaluated in relation to depressive symptoms (PHQ9), maternal confidence (MCQ) and bonding with their baby (PBQ), and will also provide information about their child's history and development utilizing a standardized questionnaire. Infants will be observed and evaluated with the Denver Development Screening Test (DDST). The outcome to be investigated is the presence of neuropsychological developmental disturbances at six and twelve months of age and their association with maternal variables between the group of mothers who received the intervention and those of the control group.
