Abstract

This study aims to characterize and to relate performance on metalinguistic skills, reading and reading comprehension of students from 3rd to 5th grade level of primary school. 270 students from 3rd to 5th grade level of primary school of three public schools, of both genders, aged from eight years to ten years and 11meses old, divided into three groups participated this study: GI (composed of 90 students in the 3rd grade level), GII (composed of 90 students in the 4th grade level), and GIII (composed of 90 students in the 5th grade level). The students will be submitted to the application of metalinguistic skills and reading evaluation protocol (PROHMELE) and reading comprehension assessment. The results will be statistically analyzed using the Mann-Whitney test in order to verify the differences between the groups for the variables of interest in the PROHMELE evaluation. For a description and comparison of the results of the reading comprehension assessment among the three groups, we will use the Kruskal-Wallis test, in order to verify possible differences between the three groups. The degree of relation between metalinguistic skills, reading and reading comprehension will be verified through the test of Spearman correlation analysis. (AU)
