Abstract

The supernumerary chromosomes (also known as B chromosomes) are extra elements, non-homologous to the A complement, and are observed in approximately 15% of eukaryote species. The functional role of B chromosomes is still under debate and maintenance in the organisms is attributed to their potential parasitic effect. The studies on B chromosomes have been mostly conducted under the cytogenetic level and genomic approaches have been poorly explored. Previous genomic analysis based on high throughput genomic sequencing, real time PCR, cytogenetic mapping, among other, were conducted in the way of understanding the genomic content and evolutionary history of B chromosomes of the African cichlid fish Astatotilapia latifasciata. Such data evidenced that the extra element was originated from a small chromosome fragment of the A genome, followed by invasion and amplification of sequences originated from several chromosomes of the A chromosome set and mitochondrial genome. Based on these data and focused in the new technologies of large-scale genomic analysis such transcriptomes, microRNomes and ChIP-Seq, the present proposal is directed to understanding the functional role of B chromosomes, using the cichlid A. latifasciata as a model.
