Speciation, reproductive isolation, and population genetics in species of Bromeliaceae family: implications for taxonomy, evolution and conservation

Abstract

The genetics of population divergence and speciation represents one of the most hotly debated topics in evolutionary biology. Speciation can be viewed as the evolution of reproductive isolation mechanisms between formerly interbreeding populations which is brought about and subsequently maintained by barriers to gene exchange to allow incipient species to be considered distinct entities. However, breeding between distinct species (hybridization) are relatively frequent in plants and animals, its importance and evolutive consequences is a matter of controversy. Regarding to evolutionary diversification, some authors focus hybridization as a primarily local and transient phenomenon that creates a kind of evolutionary noise, but is otherwise of little evolutionary significance. Others, in contrast, view hybridization as a powerful evolutionary force that creates opportunities for adaptative evolution and speciation in natural population genetic structure and consequences of the process of natural hybridization and introgression in incipient species. The objective of this project is to study the nature of reproductive isolation between sympatric populations of congenere species of Bromeliaceae family, by characterizing the populations’ genetic structure revealed by uni and biparental molecular markers. These informations are necessary to understand the processes shaping extraordinary biological diversity present in the Neotropical rainforest and the evolutionary consequences of ongoing habitat fragmentation and reduction of population size, with propose of biodiversity conservation.
