Evaluation of dengue entomological indexes in regions of São Paulo state, Brazil

Abstract

Currently the only available dengue control strategy is the reduction of infestation levels. In spite of that, experts point to a lack of knowledge related to the entomologic indexes that estimate the actual Aedes aegypti density and their relation to dengue epidemics risk. Therefore it has been difficult to use these indexes in planning of control activities. Objective: to evaluate and relate among them and to measure the costs of entomologic indexes (traditional indexes, adult index, eggs index, pupa’s index, productivity index and pupal productivity index). To relate these indexes to infection prevalence among mosquitoes and to dengue incidence during the study period. Methods: all those entomologic indexes will be measured monthly in selected areas of the two municipalities during 18 months. A serologic survey in a sample of the target area population at the beginning of the study will be undertaken. The survey will be repeated 6, 12 and 18 months later. It will use MacELlSA ELISA IgG and IHA. A cohort of survey's voluntaries will be followed up to detect dengue incidence. The relation between entomologic indexes will be analyzed by linear regression. Correlation testes will be used to evaluate the relations between incidence and entomologic indexes. Expected results: it is expected thot the present study's results will offer evidence for program managers to decide which index to use, considering their costs and effectiveness. (AU)
