Estimating occupancy for large- and medium-sized terrestrial mammals in a continuous Atlantic Forest

Abstract

Habitat loss is the main threat to biodiversity and is responsible for many species extinction, thus, it is important to understand how species use the heterogeneous habitat and how the communities are structured in function of the environmental filters. We aim to determine the occupancy of native and domestic large- and medium-sized terrestrial mammals and the environmental filters that influence their habitat use; and compare the mammal community between areas with different protection status. We will sample 45 sites distributed in a regular grid with 1.5km spacing in Serra do Japi, SP. Each two months, we will sample 15 camera trap sites. In each site, we will determine the historical land use and the current ecogeographic co-variables, such as altitude, landscape unit, presence and number of domestic animals, distance to Reserve border, water steams, roads, paths and urban areas, using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and camera traps. We will investigate the influence of each ecogeographic parameter on the occupancy of the animals using occupancy models (with PRESENCE software). We will also compare species richness and guild diversity among areas inside and outside the Reserve. (AU)
