Abstract

Aural plaque is a cosmopolitan disease that causes discomfort to animals and damage to the owners. The disease occurred in about 46% (269/581) of horses evaluated in the Midwest Paulista. Seven types of Equus caballus papillomavirus (EcPVs) were identified and four of them were associated with aural plaque (3, 4, 5 and 6). EcPV3 and / or 4 DNA was detected in 62.3% (28/45) of equine aural plaque samples from Sao Paulo State; monoinfection was observed in 8.9% (EcPV3) and 37 8% (EcPV4) of samples. The prevalence of other viruses has not been evaluated in equine aural plaque in Brazil, yet. The spontaneous resolution of the disease is rare and although there isn´t an effective treatment, results of a preliminary study demonstrated success in the treatment of aural plaques with imiquimod. However, no studies have evaluated the presence of viral DNA after treatment of aural plaques with imiquimod. Thus, the objectives of this study are to evaluate the occurrence of EcPVs in aural plaque samples from horses from different regions of Brazil by PCR, standardize diagnostic testing of EcPVs using qPCR and verify the presence of the EcPVs DNA in aural plaque samples before and after the treatment with imiquimod.
