Abstract

This project aims at obtaining Information to advise this risk evaluation process of forthcoming genetically modified sugarcane cultivars in areas where there is no available data on the current scientific literature, viz. (a) Evaluation of the potential gene flow among commercial hybrids and native Saccharum species. In order to achieve this purpose, information about the sexual reproduction of the native Saccharum species will be intensively gathered through observation and experiments. These data will then be used to plan artificial hybridization experiments among these species and sugarcane commercial hybrids; (b) Evaluation of nutritional composition and its variation range in the commercial hybrids at the main productive regions in Brazil. The information gathered will be publicly available on a database that may be used for further substantial equivalence studies for the forthcoming genetic modified sugarcane cultivars. (AU)
