Abstract

When the electric guitar is dealt with in the context of etnomusicological research or cultural studies immediately jumps up the common sense of an emblematic instrument of pop and rock music, also protagonist in a vast young appeal repertoire of popular songs from various corners of the world. In the Brazilian case, however, it acquires symbolic contours that are even more interesting, particular to a musical culture that has the classical guitar as 'legitimate' representative. Heraldo do Monte is the most important name if the matter be the formulation of a Brazilian electric guitar project. At the time of Quarteto Novo (1967), engaged with the National-Popular tought of the sixties, he started to construct a Brazilian accent, specially northeastern, which here I intend to verify in his phonographic works. The integrated analysis of textual and contextual search plans is supposed to be able of bringing musicological answers concerning about how the musician encodes musically that Brazilianness over the course of his long career, apparentely in a way less and less conflictingly with the Brazilian cultural "autonomy" (in its contradiction) and with an assimilation of conquests (musical language) of the universal done culture, if valid to his own projection of Brazil.
