Abstract
This research project focuses on continuing and improving the monitoring of the aerosol particle vertical distribution by means of active remote sensing (LIDAR, light detection and ranging) over South America, in order to improve the current capabilities of the recent established network LALINET. On one hand, this project will contribute to maintain the dataset of aerosol profiling which has been collected since 2001 over São Paulo and also to initiate a new dataset over Natal, through installing a new LIDAR system at this site in the framework of the recently approved project "Sistema de sensoriamento por laser para estudos de aerossóis" funded by "CNPq". On the other hand, this project will contribute to guarantee the quality and standardization of products offered by the LALINET network, applying a robust quality assurance program based on regular instrumental tests and algorithm intercomparison exercises. The activities proposed in this project will be mainly developed at Instituto de Pesquisas Energéticas e Nucleares (IPEN) da Comissão Nacional de Energia Nuclear, where the host group performs most of its regular activities. This group, lead by Prof. Eduardo Landulfo, coordinates the LALINET's activities, therefore the proposed research will benefit and impact over the entire South American LIDAR network. (AU)
