Abstract

The conjugated fatty acids have commercial and scientific appeal on reduction of body fat and increased lean body mass, although they are also considered as antioxidants and anti-inflammatory. Punicic acid (C18:3-9c,11t,13c) and ±-eleostearic (C18:3-9c,11t,13t) are conjugated ±-linolenic acid (C18:3-9c,12c,15c) isomers, known as CLNAs, present in high concentrations in pomegranate seed oil and bitter gourd seed oil, respectively. Despite being structurally very similar to conjugated linoleic acids (CLAs) and ±-linolenic acid (LNA), which increases the interest in these isomers, is not sure if the CLNAs have benefits similar to those of CLAs and/or LNA. In general, researches on the effects of conjugated fatty acids in the body are still limited and inconclusive, sometimes showing different functions between different isomers studied. In addition, studies show that CLNAs are metabolized and incorporated in the form of CLAs in animal tissues. Therefore, Additional studies are needed to understand the effects of this incorporation that may be altering the composition of lipids in cell membranes, interfere in the metabolism of these fatty acids for the production of eicosanoids and inflammatory cytokines and its molecular mechanisms in tissues and cells. It is proposed in this project to evaluate the effect of isomers of conjugated fatty acids (conjugated linoleic acid, punicic acid and ±-eleostearic acid) on parameters involving lipid metabolism, oxidative stress and inflammation to the tissue level (rats - serum, liver and adipose tissue) and cellular (Raw 264.7, adipocyte 3T3 and Caco-2).
