Abstract

Vascular surgeries are related to high morbidity mainly due to acute coronary events. The maintenance of salicilic acid in the perioperative period is a well recognized protective factor and we have previously demonstrated that patients under aspirin therapy with high platelet aggregability in response to arachidonic acid are at higher cardiovascular risk. Surprisingly, we have also observed that all parameters of platelet aggregability (in response to different collagen concentrations and to arachidonic acid)markedly decreased after the vascular procedure. It is our hypothesis that the surgery stress causes further increase in the thrombogenicity, and the decrease in aggregability observed could represent the measurement of "exsausted" platelets, that have been recently activated. In the present study we are going to test this hypothesis. We are going to measure in the frozen plasma obtained before and after vascular surgery for 163 patients that participated in the previous study the level of P-selectin, thromboxane and thrombin generation.
