Abstract

Our purpose is to outline the history of circulation of Italian literature translated in Brazil during the 20th century and the first decade of the 21st century, indicating literary works, authors, moments and episodes not only in the source context but especially in the target context, that is, in their relations with the environment where they have been created, but above all with the environment that receives them. Our starting point is the idea that the privileged means through which a country welcomes a literary work is the translation. Reflecting on translation in their target context means to reflect on this same context as well, that is, on the national literary system. We understand that translated literature, conceived as special literary systems inside polysystems constituted by national literatures (as defined by Even-Zohar), are submitted to peculiar conditions, according to several events which the host countries go through. In order to optimize the data collection, the development of the Dicionário Bibliográfico da Literatura Italiana Traduzida, which is already online, (www.dlit.ufsc.br), will be resumed. In this phase, the team of the Library Science/ECA-USP area will join the project and be responsible for the review of the entries already published and the creation of new criteria for cataloging the titles of the dictionary. Our purpose, after collecting the translated titles and establishing a picture of the presence and importance of the many publishing houses operating in the translated Italian literature market, will be to observe, from 1900 and within the field of the Italian literature reception in Brazil, the movement of ideas and the transformations in the target environment.
