Epidemiology of mental disturbances in a defined catchment area, Hospital das Clínicas of FMUSP and USP School of Public Health

Abstract

This is a cross-sectional study to Detect the Lifetime, 12-Month, One-Month Prior the interview prevalence of mental disorder in the catchment area of Hospital das Clínicas, the largest hospitalar complex in South America. The study population consists of a sample of all dwelling aged 18 years or more living in two counties of 90,000 inhabitants. An oversampling of all subjects 18-25 years, and old age subjects (60 years or more) has been done to detect psychosis in young males and old age morbidity. Sample size of 1,626 subjects. 1,464 interviews have been done. Non-response rate of 70%. The prevalence of disorders have been detected by CIDI (Composite International Diagnostic Interview) designed to assess mental disorders generating diagnosis according to ICD-10 and DSM-IIIR. A clinical reassessment of all positives and 30% of negatives is currently done by a team of psychiatrists using SCAN version 2 (Schedule for Clinical Assessment in Neuropsychiatry) a semi-structured clinical interview. The population in study is predominantly of middle class, but with high income contrasting with low income areas. Uses of services in the month prior the interview, and data on physical illness and use of medication have been assessed. (AU)
