Abstract

Justification: The prevalence and disability resulting from anxiety disorders in Brazil are the highest around the world. Despite this, few studies have investigated the distribution, correlates and severity of this group of disorders. The present research project aims to analyze the prevalence of anxiety disorders in the month and year prior to the interview and throughout life. Then, estimate the severity, the use of health services and the sociodemographic correlates of anxiety. Materials and methods: Data from the São Paulo Megacity Mental Health Survey, a multi-stratified cross-sectional study designed to assess psychiatric morbidity in a probabilistic sample of the population of the metropolitan region of São Paulo, will be used. A total of 5037 adults were evaluated by trained interviewers at their home using Composite International Diagnostic Interview, version 3.0 (CIDI 3.0). CIDI allows to generate diagnoses according to the operational criteria of DSM-IV and ICD-10. The evaluated anxiety disorders were: generalized anxiety disorder, social phobia, specific phobia, panic disorder, posttraumatic stress, agoraphobia without panic attacks, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and separation anxiety in the adult. The weights resulting from different probabilities of selection will be used to ponder the proportions and logistic regression models for the sociodemographic correlates. Expected results: The generated data will compose a report on the São Paulo Megacity study and the elaboration of scientific articles to be submitted to peer-reviewed journals. Other forms of dissemination in congresses and scientific meetings are also planned. (AU)
