Evaluation of aflatoxins transfer from feed to commercial species of fish and occurrence of aflatoxins in fish farming from State of São Paulo

Abstract

The aim of the project is to evaluate aflatoxin contamination in fish farming in the State of São Paulo, also assessing the mycoflora and occurrence of toxins in feed; and to evaluate the aflatoxins transfer from feed to three commercial fish species. In the first part of the experiment, according to the management of the property, feed samples for freshwater fish, in use and stored, fingerlings and growth, will be collected from five fishery establishments located in the State of São Paulo. The feed will be evaluated for mycobiota with genetic sequencing to identify the species of Aspergillus, and the presence of aflatoxins B1, B2, G1 and G2 by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Aspergillus isolates will be tested for toxigenic potential. Samples of liver, muscle and residues (pool of leftovers) for three species of freshwater fish: tetra (Astyanax altiparanae), "matrinxã" (Brycon cephalus) and "pacu" (Piaractus mesopotamicus) will be analyzed for the presence of aflatoxins B1, B2, G1, G2 and M1 by HPLC. In the second part of the experiment, the aflatoxins transfer from feed, artificially contaminated, for the same three species of fish farming will be evaluated, assessing aflatoxins in the liver, muscle and residues and the influence of the toxins on biometric parameters of species.
