Abstract

Otolith form is species specific and this characteristic offers a useful tool for many studies (taxonomy, phylogeny, diversity, comparison of lifetime, dispersion and mortality of recruitment failures, larval retention patterns, time of exposure of fish to contaminants, anthropogenic processes (causing changes in abundance and diversity of the ecosystem components), bioindicators of pulses/environmental changes, evaluation of the effect of protected areas and fisheries management, breakdown of the origin of species, diversity of colonization of environments, introduction and invasion of new species, diet identification of other animals, metamorphosis, proportion of distinct populations, life story, geolocation (retrospective of displacements, mainly for estuarine fish), archaeology, physiology, contamination (for selenium, mercury), relations between the phylogeny, characteristics of Otoliths and trophic niche, ecomorphology, effects of change in diet (aquaculture), panmixia, tran migrations and settlement marks of nursery areas, reconstruction of the history of youth migration, segregation, parasitism, understanding the state of the fisheries (time series), trophic position, differentiating between forms of species living in shallow or deep waters, population structure, mortality estimate ("natural tag") and connectivity between populations. Finally, it is worth mentioning the importance of these structures for the evaluation of climate change caused by acidification of the oceans.In this context an Atlas of these structures is essential to assist research in all areas mentioned. The Laboratory of Fish Fauna and Growth (LABIC), at IOUSP offers more than 45,000 pairs of sagittae belonging to about 210 species distributed in 70 families and 20 orders of fish. The information about the origin of these structures (georeferenced data of their catch and biological data of fish of which were dropped) are available on a database. With a grant from Fapesp otoliths of 43 species have already been analyzed whose results are being published. The differential of this publication is that, in addition to the structures themselves, are provided detailed drawings, photos of otoliths of different sizes on three sides, a statistical analysis that allows you to check the occurrence of ontogenetic differences, variations information these who value greatly the results never before treated and presented in publications available on the subject. There are no catalogs of otoliths related to fish of the South Occidental Atlantic, being this the first one.To continue the maintenance of the collection and continue the analysis of 100 species still not analyzed resources for funding (consume and services), are absolutely necessary which are requested in this proposal.
