Abstract

AIDS represents, nowadays, one of the largest public health problems by its severity and pandemic features. Brazil is one of the countries with the highest number of AIDS cumulative notifications worldwide, with 608,230 cases reported from 1980 through June 2011, of which about 15% lived in São Paulo. Although the behavior of the epidemic in São Paulo was extensively studied, little is known about the spatial distribution as a determinant of HIV/AIDS trends in this city. Some risk factors related to the condition include social components, and can be better understood through clippings of grouped geographic information. Therefore, the use of spatial analysis tools can help to select areas for specific interventions and policies by local authorities. The objectives of this research project are: 1. To describe the occurrence of AIDS cases resident in São Paulo through spatial analysis, according to sociodemographic, clinical and epidemiological variables. 2. To analyze the spatial, temporal and spatial-temporal diffusion of AIDS epidemic in São Paulo by specific subgroups: women, patients aged 50 years or older, injecting drug users and homosexual youth. 3. To check, through spatial regression analysis, the relationship between the standardized incidence and mortality from AIDS, and social, demographic, economic, educational, environmental and occupational indicators, according to São Paulo geographic clippings.
