Abstract

Use of modern contraceptive methods by the majority of Brazilian women did not reduce the occurrence of unintended pregnancies, abortions or maternal deaths as expected, which means that it might be an irregular and discontinuous use. Differently from the majority of countries where it also happens, we face a lack of information on contraceptive dynamics. Considering that inconsistencies in the use of contraceptive methods are quite common, it is necessary to measure why and when women stop using a method despite they are willing to get pregnant; or switch to a method not necessarily more efficient. In order to fully understand contraceptive choices and practices, it is crucial to investigate the components of contraceptive dynamics far beyond its prevalence rate. So, our purpose is to investigate patterns and determinants of contraceptive discontinuities, which are failures, interruptions and switches. We will conduct a retrospective longitudinal quantitative study with probabilistic sample of 18-49 year old women enrolled in Primary Health Care facilities in Sao Paulo city, Brazil. They will answer the Contraceptive Calendar questionnaire that has been largely used in Demographic and Health Surveys over 80 countries in the world. (AU)
