Post-abolition, work, everyday and small cities in the Valley of São Paulo Paraíba (1888-1930)

Abstract

This research project aims to raise conflicts , daily stresses and work arrangements that occurred after the abolition of the then small town of Vale do Paraíba : São José dos Campos , Jacarei and Paraibuna . These cities are geographically close and very connected in the socioeconomic and cultural context. In the period selected for the survey (1888-1930) constituted such cities in impoverished localities outside the economically enriching axis of coffee, with large contingents of poor free during the period of slavery. . For implementation of the survey will be used Crimes and Civil Process existing files in São José dos Campos , Jacarei and Paraibuna occurred between the years 1888 to 1930 , with the goal of raising conflicts , crime and social tensions , as well as the list of witnesses contained in such proceedings, in order to seek ways unravel working , supportive relationships and daily lives of former slaves , smaller wards and poor employees of those cities , as well as assemblages , , and common ways of working experience in the post - abolition period. Will also be surveyed newspapers of those cities with the goal of identifying the dialogues and representations contained in these journals on post-abolition. One question that arises is to ask to what extent culture, tradition , customs and working arrangements of poor free men , slaves , freedmen and former slaves were able to generate a "social capital " of this community , financing agent of change within the prevailing paternalistic relationships in the Vale do Paraíba region in the nineteenth and early decades of the twentieth century , and how these characteristics influence the sociocultural construction and organization of work in post-abolition of the region. From the enrollment of the sources mentioned above , also have the goal of archive such Document Body, digitized and made available in the Project Pro - Memory São José dos Campos and the site of the Project Pro - Memory Jacarei site .
