Apatite, zircon and epidoto fission track method: thermochronology of the northern part of Paraná Basin and the peruvian Andes

Abstract

We intend to study the effects of etching in volcanic glasses collected in the Peruvian Andes, and minerals as apatite, zircon and epidote and its implications on Fission Track Method (FTM). For it will be characterized each one of these volcanic glasses and minerals through: i) Optical Microscopy; ii) micro-Raman spectroscopy; iii) Atomic Force Microscopy, AFM; iv) Heavy Ion Accelerator; v) Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (SEM / EDS). Thus we will be able to do a theoretical and experimental study of physical-chemical phenomena occurring in the natural crystallization of each mineral. The volcanic glasses will be analyzed focusing its molecular structure and the fission track formation. The fission tracks density observed on grains surface of some minerals can vary due to natural changes of both the chemical composition and the crystal lattice. In zircon and epidote (and less frequently in apatite) the fission tracks density is anisotropic, ie some areas of the same grain surface the density is different. This can happen due to the incorporation of other minerals at the crystallization time, which can be identified and characterized. Thus, these studies aim in general to continue the improvement of the FTM in these minerals in DFQB / FCT UNESP, Presidente Prudente, where we intend to carry out this project. To achieve these goals, the purpose of this project is to continue with the Fission Track Laboratory routine at FCT DFQB/UNESP- Presidente Prudente. This lab and the Mineral Separation Laboratory was implemented and put into routine with funding obtained from FAPESP (Proj: 2005/51142-3.) through Young Researcher program for 2008-20012, which was coordinated by the proponent of this project.
