Abstract

Since the 80s, the number of patients affected by invasive infections caused by Candida species has been increasing due the increase of immunocompromised patients, invasive procedures, and use of broad-spectrum antibiotics. These yeasts, which are part of the human microbiota, take advantage of imbalances on the host to cause infections, which can be superficial or invasive. The invasive infections, known as candidemia, can present a mortality rate up to 50% and they are mainly caused by Candida albicans, C. parapsilosis, C. glabrata and C. tropicalis. Their prevalence varies between countries and each species has special characteristics, which makes necessary their identification. In addition to the identification, characterization of isolates in epidemiological studies is relevant and can be done using the antifungal susceptibility tests and phenotypic and genotypic tests. In this context, this project purposes to characterize, phenotypically and genotypically, isolates from candidemia episodes occurred on clinics hospital of FMRP, as well as analyze their susceptibility to the antifungal agents used in the treatment of candidemia. For this, tests will be done to detect the presence of proteinase, phospholipase and hemolysin; biofilm formation ability; MLST, PFGE and MLP genotyping; and disk diffusion susceptibility method and broth microdilution method according to CLSI guidelines. It is expected; therefore, contribute to this disease epidemiology on the hospital and in Brazil. (AU)
