Nanostructured layered solids as acid, basic and redox catalysts

Abstract

This project involves the synthesis and characterization of three layered materials: magadiite and octosilicate (also known as RUB-18) from the family of the hydrated layered silicates and talc, a 2:1 phyllosilicate clay, and their use in the catalytic reactions of ethanol to ethylene, ethylether and acetaldehyde. Al, V, Ti, Fe and B will be introduced into the structure of RUB-18, while Al and V, isolated or together, will be introduced in magadiite. Aluminum and boron, in the 3+ formal oxidation state, will be examined as the sources of acid sites; the other metallic ions, V+4/+5, Ti+4 and Fe+3 may provide redox catalytic sites. The two metals with which we have larger experience, V+4/+5 e Al+3, will be introduced in magadiite, with the objective to generate acidity and redox capability simultaneously, in order to produce a bifunctional catalyst. Talc will be organomodified from the synthesis, with organic groups covalently bound to the lamella. The target pending groups contain amine functionalities that will work as basic catalytic sites and for the growth of dendrons that will provide the material with a larger number of active sites. Solids will be characterized in relation to their structure, thermal and hydrothermal stability and the features of the active sites: adsorption of molecular probes for acid sites (NH3 e CO), basic (CO2) and redox (O2/H2) and examined by thermoprogrammed desorption and Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy. After confirmation of the identity of the solids and some of their reactivities, and before a deeper characterization, the lamellar materials will be tested in the transformation of ethanol as catalytic model reaction for each determined function.
