Abstract
The purpose of this proposal is to carry out a feasibility study for developing an STM-1 multiplexer with the capacity to carry up to 63 E1 tributaries at 2048 kb/s for optical access by large users to the public telecommunications networks. The technology to be used is the Synchronous Network, developed in recent years and standardized by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) as SDH - Synchronous Digital Hierarch. Synchronous Network Multiplexers are the best communications signal carriers known. They were developed to carry everything from low-speed digital signals in their small containers to very fast data signals, used, for example, in supercomputers. The all- encompassing supervision process adopted in the Synchronous Network, with information available on the status of the communication, in failures and on performance - as well as enabling centralized management - is radically transforming the quality of public communications networks. The feasibility study for the development of the first Brazilian SDH multiplex equipment will consist of the following: a study of the performance of the chipset recently launched on the world market; a systemic project for two types of multiplexer, a MUX Terminal and a MUX ADM (Add-Drop Multiplex), and planning the stages of the project. It is designed to provide a detailed estimate of the time and cost involved. (AU)
