Green manure and nitrogen fertilization in sweet potato crop

Abstract

Despite the sweet potato be a plant considered rustic, studies have shown that it absorbs considerable amounts of nitrogen (N) and responds to nitrogen fertilization. However, even the N being an essential nutrient for sweet potato, often, this nutrient is not included in the fertilizer programs of this tuberous specie. Thus, it becomes necessary to study management techniques that maximize the efficiency of nitrogen fertilization in this crop, to obtain greater levels of root yield with low cost. The objective of this work is to evaluate the response of sweet potato to nitrogen fertilization, when grown after green manure species. The experiment is being implemented and will be conducted for two years in single areas. The experiment will be arranged in a randomized block design with split-plots and 4 replications. The plots are represented by the green manure species: millet, crotalaria spectabilis, velvet bean and spontaneous vegetation. The subplots are constituted by four N rates (0, 50, 100, and 200 kg N ha-1) applied in the sweet potato grown after the green manure species. Each plot has a size of 8 m wide and 20 m in length, totaling 160 m2. Each subplot has five sweet potato rows of 4 m long, spaced 0.80 m (4 m wide). The following variables are evaluated: a) production of dry matter (DM) and amount of N accumulated by the green manure species; b) leaf diagnosis of sweet potato; c) amount of DM and N accumulated in shoots, roots, storage roots and whole plant of sweet potato; d) number, storage root yield and classification of the storage roots; e) incidence of storage roots defective; f) N rate of maximum technical efficiency and maximum economic efficiency; g) relative root yield; h) the use efficiency of N applied; i) concentration and removal of N by storage roots. The data will be submitted to analysis of variance. The means of green manure predecessor systems are compared by Tukey test (p d 0.05). The effects of N rates applied in sweet potato will be evaluated by regression analysis (p d 0.05). (AU)
