Analysis of the Mixozoaries biodiversity (Myxozoa: Myxosporea) parasites of the dominant fish species from Batalha River, middle Tietê River, SP, Brazil through morphological, histological, ultrastructural and molecular characterization

Abstract

The State of São Paulo has the Tietê as one of its major rivers, which is an extremely important source of water because of its biodiversity, its use in navigation and primarily as a direct supplier of water for thousands of local residents. Currently, the biodiversity of marine and freshwater ecosystems has been threatened, mainly due to environmental problems resulting from the ecosystems degradation. An example is the Batalha river, which belongs to the Middle Tietê draw and travels about 167 km. It has been suffering from various anthropogenic harassments. Its source is located in Serra da Jacutinga (Agudos-SP), flowing into the Tietê River in the city of Uru. Studies related to parasites and other aquatic organisms pathogens have considerably increased the relevance, especially of those with potential hosts for growing and marketing, due to the significant increase of these activities in Brazil and abroad. Among the agents responsible for diseases in the collected fish species are the myxosporean, which can cause significant economic damage, with high mortality ratios. In this sense, it is necessary to emphasize that fish diseases constitute a factor of harm in fish production, especially in aquaculture. Based on the above, this study aims to evaluate the biodiversity of mixozoaries parasites of fish species which are more frequently collected in the Batalha River, through a morphological, histological, ultrastructural and molecular characterization. This study will be carried out due to the great socio-economic importance of this river to the region and to the diversity of fish, which enables many species to be studied with great possibilities of description of new species of parasites that, in fact, broaden the knowledge of global biodiversity.
