Alternative procedure for clinical tests: multielemental analysis of body fluids using portable X-ray fluorescence spectrometer

Abstract

In preventive medicine, clinical diagnosis or in treatment progress of various disorders, several biochemical tests (such as, serum Calcium, Calemia, Cloremia, among others) must be done in serum. According to the last National Quality Control Program (ProEx / 2014), 4524 Clinical Analysis Laboratories and 57 Blood Banks attended a demand of ~ 50 million of biochemical tests (Na, Cl, Ca, Fe, K, etc.). However, there is a lack of such laboratory for attending populations in regions with difficult access and underserved. For example, the case of the Amazon region where transportation is by boat, which can take days, preventing its execution. Based upon this need, we intend to provide an alternative for performing biochemical tests quickly, efficiently and with potential to use outside of the laboratory premises. In this study, we intend to optimize the use of portable equipment, based on the X-Ray Fluorescence technology, to perform biochemical tests (measurement of ions) in whole blood and serum samples, deposited on paper. This procedure introduces simplifications and advantages when compared to the conventional procedures used in clinical laboratories, such as the use of small amount of body fluid (dozens of microliters), non-destructive procedure and the possibility of performing several analyzes simultaneously. This alternative may also be useful when the availability of biological material is scarce, which is the case of premature pediatric clinic, besides the possibility to perform analysis in other body fluids (urine, saliva, etc) (AU)
