The arrow of jealousy: the kinship and its reverse side according to Aweti at the Upper Xingu

Abstract

The book presents an ethnography of sorcery and its relation to kinship within the multilingual system of the Upper Xingu (MT), as seen from one of its constituent groups - the Aweti's (tupi) - point of view. Showing that sorcery occurs generally among people that are closely related, and in contrast to the native and anthropological image of peaceful relations between the xinguano peoples, the ethnography allows to describe sorcery as the antithesis of kinship while also being derived from it. By incorporating recent developments of kinship studies in anthropology, it leads not only to a reformulation of Upper Xingu's image in ethnology, but also to a debate over still unexplored aspects of amerindian socialities.
