Abstract

Lipid oxidation is a degenerative process that disturbs the structure and function of cells with pathologic consequences as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases, atherosclerosis, diabetes, aging and carcinogenesis. In this project, we joint complementary expertises to explore how oxidized lipids affect the biophysical properties of lipid bilayers in terms of membrane integrity, permeability, as well as formation of lipid rafts. In the following, we aim to unveil the role of oxidized lipids in promoting amyloidogenic aggregates formation on membrane surface. Further, by means of oxygen sensor, we investigate the consequences of singlet oxygen production as well as its preferential location within the cell after a photosensition process. The experimental tools will comprise SAXS, optical microscopy and advanced fluorescence techniques. (AU)
