Diversity and bioactive compound production of endophytic microorganisms associated to Passiflora incarnata.

Abstract

Endophytes are microorganisms able to live inside plant tissue at least during one cycle of their lives with no damage to the host. Since all plants investigated up to now showed an endophytic microbiota, it was assumed that this interaction may bring advantages of a particular ecological importance. Passiflora (Passifloraceae) is a fast-growing perennial vine with many chemical substances, mainly flavonoids, which present medical properties like prevention of heart and central nervous system problems or even appearance of wrinkles. These are some of the reasons why the passion fruit, as Passiflora is known, was approved by the German Comission E to be used for the nervousness, neuralgia and insomnia treatment among other neural diseases. The carbonil alkaloids present in the leaves work as actors of free radicals, vasorelaxant and release GABA, serotonin and epinephrine. In this last decade, global money marketing for phytotherapy involved billions of dollars. In Brazil, ABIFISA (Brazilian Association for Herbal Drug Companies) estimated rates between US$ 350-550 millions. Nowadays, there is a concern to minimize the threat of a growing distance between our country and developed ones in this business sector. Considering the recent scientific reports on the flavonoid production by endophytic microorganisms, the great market to be explored and the lack of information about endophytes in Passiflora, this study aims to bio prospect microbial flavonoids, isolating, purifying and characterizing endophytes of fungi and bacteria present in P. incarnata. Other goals include the investigation of phylogenetic relationship of the isolates through poliphasic approach; flavonoid quantification present in the aerial part of the plants and the evaluation of antimicrobial potential of the isolates to Passiflora pathogens. The strains considered of interest will be deposited at the Brazilian Collection of Environmental and Industrial Microorganisms - CBMAI, UNICAMP, to make them available for further studies. It is known that the exploitation of secondary metabolites in plants of medical importance brings a very positive economic impact for the herbal drug industry. (AU)
