Indexing language for libraries in the perspective of indexing policy


The indexing language, as conversion tool, must be used both by the indexer after assigning the concepts taken from the document, and by the user before assigning the concepts taken from the information need that will guide the search strategy in the catalog. Taking into account the problem of logical and hierarchical structure of Unesp's indexing language, it is important the research on the process of preparing the logical and hierarchical structure of languages in the perspective of an indexing policy using the research action methodology where actions are negotiated during the development of the research and to foresee the preparing of a manual of indexing language aiming its continuous updating and maintenance. So, it is proposed to systemize a theoretical and methodological proposal of indexing language with and for libraries that aims at: development of indexing languages so that libraries can have a good retrieving by subject from their on-line catalog; to provide a theoretical and methodological subsidies for preparing, establishing and evaluating of indexing languages in library environment; and to assess strategies of methodological intervention by forming teams for preparing, establishing and evaluating of indexing languages in libraries. The research development will consist of theoretical and methodological dimension with study on indexing language. In the applied dimension will be conducted data collection from questionnaires on samples of university libraries and will also study the applicability of softwares for the development and maintenance of indexing languages.
