Abstract

Brazil stands out in egg production, especially in São Paulo State, and this agroindustrial activity is responsible for a big part of the national economy. This expressive production demands an urgent need to research this topic. The increasing population and consequent increasing demand for food, has been pushing the agricultural sector, requiring techniques and studies that incorporate new technologies and increase production. Due to its important role in the meat production sector and also to be responsible for another protein source of great importance in human nutrition, the egg, the aviculture is one of the sectors of agriculture with higher emphasis on the development of targeted technologies to optimize production. Therefore, there are several studies on this area, and the tools to better define the designs of those, are extremely important to improve the accuracy of results and optimize costs. It is well known that the increase of the number of repetitions may provides more reliable results, however, this increase may lead to encumbrances the research, becoming a limiting factor in zootechnical experiments. In addition, apart from the high costs of maintenance, bioethical issues have lead the research to reduce the number of animal experimentation, which could invalidate the results, if the number of samples and plot size is smaller than the recommended. In general, during the experiments, assays with low accuracy may lead the researcher to incorrect conclusions of the obtained results and the lack of information has constituted a major problem for zootechnical experiments. This way, important aspects such as the coefficient of variation, the size of parcels and the number samples, must be studied, since these all have great effect on the experimental variation. Thus, this project aims at establishing rating ranges of coefficients of variation for the main variable responses in studies with broiler chickens and commercial laying hens, as well as to estimate the optimal sizes of experimental plot and sample, in order to guide researchers to an accuracy data of their research.
