Abstract

The head and neck cancer is one of the ten most frequent in Brazil, it reaches about 1.7% of the Brazilian population. Treatments may result in functional and aesthetic deficiencies, depending on the location and staging of the tumor. Educational activities are important in the process of adaptation and generation of self-management skills. Objectives: to develop and to validate an education program grounded in building skills for self-management for patients diagnosed with head and neck cancer, and to evaluate this program, comparatively with the regular educational attendance, through instruments of quality of life, anxiety and depression. Method: study of a mixed nature, quantitative and qualitative, divided into three stages: (1) descriptive study about the development process, evaluation and validation of educational content by health professionals by use of the Delphi technique; (2) experimental study, randomized and controlled trial, through the use of Funcional Assessment of Cancer Therapy - Head and Neck (FACT-H&N) and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS); (3) qualitative study, to assess, according to the reception study, the educational material developed for the experimental group. Quantitative data will be analyzed using descriptive and analytical statistics, with appropriate methods for each stage of the study, it will taken the significance level of 5%, and shall be used the software Statistical Package for Social Science 22.0. Qualitative data will be organized and analyzed by Bardin content analysis. (AU)
