Genetic diversity and seeds viability of the Balfourodendron riedelianum (Engl.) Engl. for ex situ conservation and management of the species

Abstract

Balforoudendron riedelianum (pau-marfim) is widely spread in Brazil, has hardwood used in carpentry and construction, however is threatened due to logging and forest fragmentation, resulting in the need for genetic conservation of the species. In order to compensate for the loss of several tree species, the Instiuto Florestal de São Paulo has been studying and implementing Asset Germplasm Banks (AGB) since 1964 serving as a source of genetic material for ex situ conservation and forest restoration. The study will be conducted in the Estação Experimental de Luiz Antonio - SP, where all 1400 adult trees existing in population will have the most important silvicultural traits measured for quantitative genetic analysis and leaf tissues sampled for molecular genetic analysis. To study of the seeds germination and fruits and seedlings biometrics will be collected from 36 trees, 100 fruits totaling 10.800 seedlings (three replicates). For the analysis of seed storage will be collected 10 fruits of the five matrix totaling 2.700 fruits (three replicates). We intend to investigate the genetic diversity and structure, effective size, coancestry and quantitative traits. The results will allow understand the contemporary process of genetic post-isolation reproduction by fragmentation and its impact on the effective size of the populations of B. riedelianum to outline the best strategies for the preservation and collection of seeds, as well as thinning of the trial, with to minimize the inbred crosses.
