Abstract

The limitation of natural resources such as land and water, can impose serious difficulties for food production to meet population growth and ensure food security over the coming years. In addition to the traditional ways of increasing production and productivity of crops, food availability can be enhanced through reductions of a series of losses that occur along their supply chain. However, several challenges involved in measuring food loss show the importance of an environment that systematize this type of information and consolidate indicators that are comparable among, for example, different products and regions. In this context, this project aims to develop and consolidate an information system of postharvest loss in agriculture of São Paulo state in an online and free access platform that provides: (a) indicators of postharvest losses; (b) methodologies of measurement of postharvest losses; (c) strategies to mitigate losses in each stage of the analyzed supply chains; and (d) an online tool for losses calculation. This platform will be a reference to assist decision-making related to the reduction of food losses in the state of São Paulo, both from the public sector and the private sector, and can benefit society as a whole by increasing the availability of food and reducing its price.
