Abstract
Pterins, heterocyclic compounds present in living systems, are well-known type I (electron-transfer) and type II (singlet oxygen) photosensitizers under UVA irradiation. They can photoinduce oxidation of nucleotides, DNA, proteins and membrane lipids. This project aims to study the cellular uptake of dihydrobiopterin, one of the most relevant pterins from a biological point of view, the photoconversion to biopterin and the generation of singlet molecular oxygen and other reactive oxygen species inside the cell, using advanced microscopy techniques, such as Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging Microscopy.
