Abstract

This research project aims to analyze the protests that took place in June 2013 in Brazil and their developments, based on the concept of cycles of protest (Tarrow, 1995). The objective is to investigate the emergence, circulation, appropriation and use of repertoires of contention (Tilly, 2008) throughout the cycle of protest, aiming to understand the uses and innovations of form political organization and performances. The main hypothesis is the June cycle of protests is a landmark, meaning a transition from repertoires of contention orienting political performances. On one hand, similarly to foreign cycles of protest (the anti-globalization one) there is an emergence of an autonomist repertoire which comes to compete with the socialist repertoire as a source for performance models. On the other hand, there was a revival of the national patriotic tradition, build up during the "Diretas-Já" (1984) and Collor's Impeachment (1992) campaigns, and reaffirmed on March 2015 demonstrations. The theoretical question addressed here is the connection between cycles of protest and circulation of repertoires of contention and how this affects political performance, especially how innovative agents can be n the eve of protest s.
