Abstract

Following important findings in the last decade, the knowledge of the Ediacaran Fauna of the Gondwana supercontinent has substantially increased. Remarkable fossiliferous occurrences of the first Edicaran Skeletonized metazoans (Nama Assemblage, 550-541 Ma), were recorded in Uruguay, Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil, driving new studies on taxonomy, taphonomy and paleoecology of those assemblages. However, to date there are no confirmed occurrences of typical organisms of the Ediacaran Assemblages, found in all continents worldwide (Avalon and White Sea assemblages, 575-550 Ma), and which are characterized by soft body parts. A recently conducted study in the Cerro Negro Formation, La Providencia Group, Neoproterozoic of Argentina has revealed the presence of thousands of soft-bodied fossil organisms characteristic of the named "Ediacaran Fauna", as representatives of the genus Aspidella, discoidal forms, non-identified taxa, as well as MISS and ichnofossils. After the discovery of this unique fossil assemblage in the continent (konservat fossillagerstätte) altogether with the existence of previous works on sedimentology and stratigraphy, the accomplishment of multi-proxy studies approaching paleoecology, geochronology and paleomagnestism is on demand. This project will enable to build up a proper paleoenvironmental and bioestratigraphic framework of this singular fossil occurrence, in addition to provide an important tool for stratigraphic correlation with another Avalon and White Sea fossil-bearing Ediacaran units. The results of this project definitively will place the South America continent as one of the main worldwide spots in the studies of the Precambrian paleontology. (AU)
