Abstract

This research project is strongly linked to the main theme of the Associated French-Brazilian International Research Laboratory (LIA): "Energy and Environment". In fact, the goal of this work is to analyze the safety and reliability of the long tubes, known as risers, that carry oil from the sea bottom to the surface. These tubes can be several kilometers long and are not easily inspected for verifying the presence of dangerous defects. Unchecked, defects may grow in size bringing about long term catastrophic ecological consequences. Here we analyze from the mathematical point of view the possibility of identifying, as well as their eventual numerical recovery, the presence of defects in risers. Furthermore, we propose a numerical method for the recovery of the function that models the perturbation in the flexural rigidity of the riser. From this recovery we intend to estimate the reliability of the structure against fatigue failures. The project is multidisciplinary. It brings together the expertise of researchers in numerical analysis, solid mechanics and structures. It establishes and strengthens the scientific collaboration links between Brazil and France.
