Abstract

Syphilis during pregnancy is an important cause of morbidity and perinatal mortality, with vertical transmission rate in untreated women of 50-85% in primary and secondary stages of the disease. Rationale: A significant increase in the incidence of congenital syphilis in the national panorama was observed. Perhaps this increase is related to breast diagnosis and/or improperly treatment of pregnant women. Therefore, this study was proposed in order to evaluate the incidence of this disease in a tertiary university hospital. Methodology: epidemiological, retrospective study, to be held at the Botucatu Medicine Faculty Maternity Hospital - UNESP from 2011 January to 2014 December. Study already approved by the Institutional Ethics Committee. All reported cases of mothers with positive VDRL at birth and their newborn (NB) will be selected and excluded cases with newborns whose variables of the protocol could not be obtained. The sample size is calculated by convenience sample. Maternal, neonatal and postnatal variables will be evaluated. The search for information in medical records and data in the books of the Neonatal Unit from birth to discharge, and outpatient follow-up to 18 months of age will be held. The data will be tabulated on Excel spreadsheets and will be held frequency tables and association with descriptive analysis, averaging and standard deviation and proportions. (AU)
