The study of galaxies in groups with SAM-FP and T80-south and the construction of the ABRAS T-100 telescope

Abstract

The instrument SAM-FP installed inside the SOAR Adaptive Module (SAM) at the SOAR telescope, is working regularly with its Fabry Perot device for obtaining data cubes with spectral resolution of 11200 and spatial resolution of 0.5 arcsec. This instrument was tested in 2015 and will be open for community use in 2016B with its first early-science call. In collaboration with the Laboratoire d'Astrophysique de Marseille (LAM) we have been performing several studies of the kinematics of galaxies in groups. The main objective of this proposal is to give our group the means to maximize the science return with the SAM-FP instrument by making changes in the instrument that will allow a new CCD to be used (EMCCD). The main scientific goal we want to reach with SAM-FP is to improve our understanding of the kinematics in the centers of nearby galaxies, in the context of the cusp-core problem. A second project, which is the focus of this application, is the T80-south, a robotic 80cm telescope, located at Cerro Tololo Interamerican Observatory, in Chile. It has an optical camera with a wide field of view of 2 square degrees with which we want to do a survey of 8000 sq degrees of sky called S-PLUS. One of the goals of this proposal is to get prepared to use the data that will be collected by this survey. Among other projects, SPLUS will allow us to study the morphology and stellar populations of galaxies in nearby systems, study globular clusters and dwarf galaxies around the most nearby galaxies and search for groups and clusters, for galaxy evolution studies. Finally a third focus of this proposal is to finish the installation of a 1.0 m telescope (the ABRAS telescope) in Argentina, which will be dedicated to pointed observations in the near infrared (J,H,K). The construction of this telescope has been fully funded so far by the Government of Argentina (lead by the Observatory of Cordoba) and the University of Sao Paulo, through a Nucleo de Pesquisa called LabCosmos with funds from the Pro-Reitoria de Pesquisa of USP.
