Star clusters as tracers of formation and evolution of the Galactic bulge and Magellanic Clouds: modeling of data from the Hubble Space Telescope, SOAR, Gemini and Very Large Telescope

Abstract

The objective of this proposal is the study of star clusters in the Galactic bulge, and in the Magellanic Clouds, with the aim of better understanding the formation of the bulge, and the interactions between the Clouds and the Milky Way, and as well on the chemical and dynamical evolution of the Magellanic Clouds. We will use data from the Hubble Space Telescope, of exceptional spatial resolution (~ 0.05 arcsec), data from the Gemini telescope using the state-of-the-art instrument GEMS, the SOAR telescope with the also state-of-the-art instrument SAMI, and multi-object spectroscopy (MOS) from the Very Large Telescope of European Southern Observatory (VLT/ESP), able to obtain simultaneously spectra for a hundred stars at high spectral resolution. Such kind of data has been leading to the building of Colour-Magnitude Diagrams (CMDs) of unprecedented accuracy for star clusters, and revealed the presence of multiple stellar populations. The modelling technique of comparison of observed CMDs with theoretical isochrones, will be carried out via maximization of likelihood, extracting information on age, chemical composition, distance and reddening, for different sets of isochrones. For the Magellanic Clouds, the derivation of physical parameters of a sample of 39 populous clusters observed with HST, and over 120 objects of lower mass observed with SOAR, will allow a comprehensive study of age and metallicity gradientes, age-metallicity relation and 3D structure of the distribution of these objects. Finally, aiming at making available the use of the tools of analysis of CMDs, and optimization of CPU time, Leandro Kerber will train students for the use of his code, and as well will develop a web interface, and implement the code on the supercomputer ICE of the Laboratório de Astroinformática of IAG/USP.
