Abstract

Studies in India indicate that attendants of gas stations often exhibit abnormalities in pulmonary function parameters. The changes found are compatible with restrictive patterns and suggestive of small airway diseases. From these changes can be assumed that such workers have an increased risk for developing inflammatory reactions in small airways called bronchiolitis. The etiology of these processes could be in the inhalation of volatile products derived from oil or in the exposure to pollutants released by automotive engines. The present study aims at investigating the presence of respiratory symptoms, lung function abnormalities, radiological changes and airways inflammatory profile in 50 gas stations attendants, no smokers, and without medical comorbidities. The volunteers will answer a standardized questionnaire, perform simple spirometry, pulse oscillometry, high-resolution computerized tomography, cytological and biochemical analysis of induced sputum. A control group will consist of 50 healthy employees of a university hospital. Also environmental exposure measures will be carried out including levels of particulate matter in the workplace volunteers and urinary dosages of benzene metabolites. (AU)
