Abstract
This research project aims to relate the chemical structures of betalains with their physicochemical properties and photochemical targeting biotechnological applications. We intent to clarify: i) how structural changes affect the physico-chemical and photochemical properties of substituted aryl betalains, ii) how to increase the cross section of two-photon absorption of artificial betalains in water, iii) what is the best method for preparation quasibetalains and how substituents modulate their color, and iv) how structural changes affect the internalization and compartmentalization of betalains in living cells.
