Abstract

The present prospective open cohort study of 6 years of follow-up within a periodontal maintenance therapy program will evaluate in 56 subjects paired by gender (50% females) and age the levels of A. actinomycetemcomitans (A); the occurrence and distribution of a-b-c-d-e-f-g serotypes (B); the prevalence and distribution of A. actinomycetemcomitans JP2 and Non JP2 clones (C); detection of the cytolethal distending toxin genes (CdtA-CdtB and CdtC) (D); and the relationship between clinical and microbial parameters (E). The sample population will be composed of 28 regular compliers (mean age 54.6± 7.5 years) and 28 irregular compliers (mean age 52.5± 7.3 years). Therefore, it will be compared the effects of periodontal maintenance therapy between regular and irregular compliers on periodontal stability and it will be determined the relation among periodontal clinical parameters (periodontal pocket depth, clinical attachment level, blending on probing, furcation involvement, periodontal suppuration, plaque index) presence, levels and virulence of A. actinomycetemcomitans. Finally, it will be also compared results from both molecular techniques - conventional and real time polymerase chain reaction techniques (PCR and RT-PCR, respectively) to detect A. actinomycetemcomitans at baseline (at the end of active periodontal therapy) and at 6 years of periodontal maintenance therapy. The clinical periodontal examinations were performed by trained and systematically calibrated periodontists along the periodontal maintenance visits (mean 8.7± 4.0). Subgingival biofilm samples were collected, once a year, through standard procedures from the deepest periodontal pockets and storage at -80oC for further laboratorial processing. (AU)
