Abstract

Phase equilibria in lipid, green solvents and biofuel technologies have gained increasing attention as research topics (experimental and thermodynamic modeling) in the last two decades. Among main compounds within this area of research, oils/fats for human consumption, biodiesel, bioglycerol, free-glycerol biofuels and solvents from carbohydrate-based biomass (as sugar cane) figure as most important ones. In this context, this research project goals at: (1) determining binary vapor-liquid equilibrium data (VLE) by Differential Scanning Calorimetry to map interactions among different functional groups that constitute compounds of interest; (2) determining liquid-liquid equilibrium data (LLE) involving oil/triacylglycerol (or glycerol), products of lipid oxidation and green solvents and/or low-toxicity solvents to evaluate liquid-liquid extraction as an alternative process for oils/fats and bioglycerol purification; (3) evaluating and/or improving the predictive capacity of the UNIFAC (UNIquac Functional Activity Coefficient) method and its versions for describing VLE and LLE, and of the ASOG (Analytical Solution of Groups) method for describing LLE involving systems of interest; (4) evaluating the potential of biomolecule gamma-valerolactone as a biofuel and as a green solvent, and applying the F-SAC (Functional-Segment Activity Coefficient) model for describing its LLE; (5) determining normal boiling temperature data for partial acylglycerols. Predictive tools of high accuracy and applicability spectra are fundamental in engineering projects, and are based on applied thermodynamics, which is the main scope of this project. (AU)
