Abstract

This project seeks to produce a synthesis on the multifaceted aspects of predication in the Portuguese language. Drawing on a number of works that have already been carried out to systematically describe the predicate structure of verbs, predicative nouns (and their respective supporting verbs) and predicative adjectives, the project aims at providing a general perspective on how predication is structured in terms of sets of relatively extensive and semantically homogeneous predicates. In fact, there is a need to establish a comparative work that synthesizes the predicate types, starting from the homogeneous sets already identified (such as, for example, predicates that name violent acts, sports, expression of opinion, among others), mapping them both in the European and in the Brazilian Portuguese varieties. In this sense, it is possible to notice that these sets are not restricted to only one grammatical class, and that a work of synthesis could shed a new light of how the predication is organized. The systematic comparison of lexical-syntactic and semantic properties seems to be the most adequate way to establish a repertoire of similarities and fractures between the two varieties of Portuguese studied here. To do this, constant interaction is required between researchers who have native competence in each variety, in order to successfully identify both the the broad and the thinly granular differences between similar constructs in each variety. The results obtained from this work will be widely disseminated in scientific journals, and scientific events. The data obtained should be used in computerized applications and also, it is hoped, in didactic materials intended to teach Portuguese, mainly as a foreign language. From the data it is also expected that a framework be created for integrating new work that will advance on other related topics and at other levels of description. (AU)
